by WebsitePromoter on September 27, 2009

Want to give the search engines a nudge to let them know about your brand new website?

Maybe you are currently not listed in the the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and others and still wondering why they are not displaying your website. There are dozens of reasons why the search engines may not have your website listed, but that topic we will not go in to within this post.

The purpose of this web post is to highlight the various locations where you can submit your website link to notify the others about your website.

Why submit to the major search engines?

Simply to let them know that your website exists.

Plus to get your website indexed

Plus to get more traffic

Plus to get more sales, leads, commissions, etc.

The list can go on.

The search engine are busy.

Every day they go out and visit various website to add to their index (database). Some they add, some they exclude, some website they simply ignore. Not hundreds, let’s say millions of websites per day.

What about your website?

If you are looking to build traffic and listings in the search engines, notifying and submitting your website to the engines is the first place to start.

Who are the major search engines?

In most cases you may already know the answer already.

The major search engine in your world is the online search tool you currently use.

It could be Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask or something else.

You may use a different search engine for your shopping, like Amazon or eBay, or your may simply be looking for people in one of the many social networks like FaceBook, Twitter or others.

Many professional link builders or website optimizers chase after Google because yes, it is the largest engine, but for certain demographics and regions of the world, Bing or Yahoo may come out on top. This is heavily debated topic, but for now, let’s get back to submitting your website to the search engines.

Rules – there are always rules!

Be aware, if you knock on someone’s door too much, they may get irritated and may send you away.

The same applies to submitting your website to the engines.

Most important rule: Submit once and walk away.

Here are some of the common misconceptions that are out there:

  • Submitting your website everyday. Do not do this. If you submit on Monday and your site does not appear on Tuesday, relax. It’s the nature of things. Your new website may show up next week, it may show up next month, etc.
  • Submitting every page of your website. Again … very not good. If your website is designed properly, the search engine bots will eventually find the various web pages you have on your website.
  • Trying to contact the search engine to ask “Why is my website not in Google” or something similar. Not necessary.
  • Purchasing an automated software program to submit submit submit … it’s almost like that yummy thing we call spam. There are other methods, this is not one of them.
  • Not reading the guidelines. Basically everything listed above is usually somewhere in the guidelines for adding your website. Each engine has them, so not reviewing them is like a car without wheels.

What you will need before you submit.

Your website URL + time.

That is it in most cases.

For some you they may allow a brief description and a few related keywords about your website, but mainly your website address.

Your website address will look something like this:

http://www.yourwebsite.com

It’s that simple.

Try not to submit

  • http://www.yourwebsite.com/index.php
  • http://www.yourwebsite.com/my-great-website-homepage.html

Is this really necessary?

Many will say that submitting your website to the major search engine is not required, but bottom line, it does not hurt as long as you do not abuse it.
